Papua New Guinea

$14.00

Papua New Guinea is a highland single-origin from one of coffee’s last frontiers — grown by village gardens in the Wahgi Valley and Eastern Highlands, where modern roads didn’t arrive until the 1930s. Bright, tropical, complex, unmistakably distinctive. A full pound per bag, hand-roasted in 25-lb small batches by master roasters with 20 years at the drum.

Tasting notes: Tropical fruit, papaya, milk chocolate, black tea, bright winey acidity, medium body.

At a glance

  • Altitude: 1,400–1,900 meters above sea level
  • Varietal: Typica, Arusha, Bourbon
  • Process: Washed (fully washed, sun-dried)
  • Roast: Medium
  • Bag: 1 lb (16 oz) — about 33% more coffee than the 12 oz specialty-coffee standard
  • Brew: Pour-over, drip, Chemex
  • Best for: adventurous drinkers; fruit-forward coffee seekers

The farm story: Papua New Guinea coffee is farmed by "village gardens" — family plots of 50 to a few hundred trees grown alongside food crops. The country’s volcanic highlands, isolation, and genetic stock (Typica varieties imported from Jamaica in the 1930s) give PNG coffee its distinctive tropical fruit character.

Brew recommendation: Pour-over (V60 or Kalita) at a 1:16 ratio, medium-fine grind. The tropical fruit notes open up with slower, cooler extraction.

A hidden detail: The Jamaican Blue Mountain Typica varietal was smuggled into Papua New Guinea in 1937 — the genetic lineage gives PNG coffees their complex, fruit-forward character despite being grown half a world from Jamaica.

The Art & Science of Coffee. Hand-roasted in 25-lb small batches by master roasters — twenty years behind the drum. A full pound per bag, because 12 ounces was never enough.
