Sumatra Mandheling

$14.00

Sumatra Mandheling is a classic Indonesian single-origin coffee from the Mandailing region of North Sumatra — wet-hulled, earthy, syrupy, and unmistakably Sumatran. The coffee that taught the West what Indonesian coffee tastes like. A full pound per bag, hand-roasted in 25-lb small batches by master roasters with 20 years at the drum.

Tasting notes: Dark cocoa, cedar, dried tobacco, herbal, molasses, heavy body, low acidity.

The farm story: Mandheling coffee takes its name from the Mandailing people of North Sumatra. Smallholder farmers on the island’s volcanic slopes harvest cherries and hand them to local mills that remove the parchment wet — the Giling Basah method — before sun-drying. The result is coffee with the heaviest body and most distinctive earthy character in the specialty world.

Brew recommendation: French press (1:15 ratio, coarse grind, 4-minute steep) to emphasize the heavy body. Also excellent as drip or Moka pot.

A hidden detail: Sumatra Mandheling was one of the first specialty coffees brought to the U.S. market in the 1970s — it helped define what third-wave roasters considered "origin coffee" decades before the term existed.

The Art & Science of Coffee. Hand-roasted in 25-lb small batches by master roasters — twenty years behind the drum. A full pound per bag, because 12 ounces was never enough.
